Instructions

  1. In a small bowl, whisk together hot milk and egg yolk; set aside.
  2. In a large bowl or stand mixer, combine flour, sugar, and yeast.
  3. Add the warm milk mixture, butter, and salt; stir until combined into rough dough.
  4. Knead by hand for about 10 minutes or using a dough hook on low speed for approximately 5 minutes.
  5. Divide the dough into two or three portions; let rest covered with a tea towel.
  6. Add food coloring to each portion and knead until fully colored.
  7. Let the colored dough rise in a warm place until doubled (about 1.5 hours).
  8. Punch down the dough gently; shape each colored piece into rectangles and stack according to desired colors.
  9. Roll tightly from one end to form a loaf; place in greased loaf pan.
  10. Let it rise again covered until doubled (about one hour).
  11. Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C) while waiting for the second rise.
  12. Bake for about 30 minutes until golden brown and hollow-sounding when tapped.
  13. Cool completely before slicing.
